When Inspiration Hits

When Inspiration Hits

Inspiration can come any time from anywhere, and when it hits, one really should do something with it.

Wellington is an exciting city full of wonderful things to do and see (my blog post about ‘My Wellington Experience’ is testament to that). So when an opportunity to head down there came up, I certainly wasn’t about to say no.

Even in winter, Wellington weather can be somewhat surprising. Believing I was heading into a stormy couple of days still didn’t faze me as I boarded the plane in a sun-drenched Tauranga.

No wind. That’s right. Flying into Wellington was a breeze, literally.

It was mid-afternoon, and my son was right on time to meet me. As time with him was limited to that single evening, there was only one thing I wanted to do, go to Te Papa and see the Surrealists exhibition. I have always loved this style of art with my heroes of Breton, Dali, Ernst and Cheval, so to go and see their works was an absolute must.

I was not disappointed!

There were paintings, sculptures, magazines, sketches and all manner of other creative endeavours the Dada and Surrealists came up with. Their sense of weirdness and humour is out of the box. With their use of brushes and pens, they created art in many forms.

For example. Here is something even you can do.

Take a small article from a newspaper and cut out every word. Then put all the words into a paper bag, shake gently. Now take out one word at a time and copy each word exactly as they come from the bag.

And there you have it – an original poem by you.

This is a Dadaist Poem by Tristan Tzara

But the most fun was being able to recreate the mirror in the painting “Portrait of Edward James”, which shows the back of the man’s head in the mirror… below.

Into a wee room I went, stood in front of the mirror and what I saw was exactly that – the back of my head. Freaky, to say the least, but also incredibly inventive. I’m not sure how it’s done, but there was a mirror behind me, so I’m assuming it had to be all about the angles (and I’m no mathematician).

A frame surrounded a peephole, and my son took the photo below. What a great memento of a great day.

When Inspiration Hits

Walking around this exhibition and seeing the art made me want to get pen and ink and sketch or write poetry. This is the thing with inspiration; one has to make the step to follow through immediately and so when I got back to my hotel room that night, out came the pen and ideas were transferred onto paper to be worked on at a later date.

Let’s trust that “later date” is sooner rather than… well, later

Flying High

Flying High

On a recent trip to the capital I was again shown how the right attitude makes things a lot more pleasant.

An early morning alarm woke me to the cold snap that the North Island was experiencing. One of the blessed things about my life is that I no longer need to wake via an alarm, so as you can imagine, waking up when it was still dark to sudden loud sound was not the most pleasant thing.

However, it would be fun as I was about to fly off down the island to Wellington and stay with my son for a few days.

All packed and ready to go, my friend Kathy arrived in her puffer jacket and fingerless gloves, and at 6.30, we headed off to the airport. Now I am a bit of a techie geek and love using apps to make life so much easier. Air N.Z.’s app is a winner as I was able to check in the night before and get my boarding pass all sorted right there on my phone. And as I only had a cabin bag, there was no need to check in a bag. (I try to be as minimalist as possible – even in the cold!).

Kathy and I had time for coffee and a catch up before the call came across the intercom announcing boarding open.

Mask on, phone open to the boarding pass, I was on my way.

I found my seat, which I had specifically picked down the back. I don’t know why I prefer the back seats, maybe closer to the toilet???? Not that I get sick, but in case I need to pee, which is very likely after a coffee.

I parked my carry-on luggage into the overhead locker and settled into my seat.

This was when the right attitude kicked in. Looking down the aisle, I happened to see a young family heading towards me. You know the thoughts, ‘oh, I hope they stop soon.’ The mother was carrying a wee baby who was crying, well, more like screaming. Dad and junior were in the lead, and sure enough, they kept coming.

Nooooooo, worst nightmare.

The screaming wasn’t abating, and my thought was, ‘bloody hell, we’re not even up in the air yet when the cabin pressure can play havoc with bubba’s ears’.

Nothing for it as mumma headed towards the empty seat next to me. My maternal feelings came to the fore, and my heart went out to her. I pictured my daughter who had recently brought two babies of similar ages over from Sydney, and the flight home had been, (according to her):

“mildly punishing flight as Jack was awake for 90%”

Mumma tried to calm baby, but bubs was not having a bar of it. With a mask on, it was hard to convey the empathetic look I gave her, but thankfully the flight attendant came to all our rescue within just a few minutes. She offered me a seat at the front of the plane, not only helping me but giving mumma an extra bit of space.

I followed her down the aisle, and there was the empty seat with the bonus of being TWO empty seats. So not only did I have the quiet, but I had space also.

It was a stunning flight! I had a beautiful view from the window seat of the mountains and coastline as we flew down the North Island to Wellington.

And to fill in my time? Why I wrote this blog!

Enjoy some images from the flight.

And let me give Air N.Z. a quick plug. Wonderful flight, lovely crew and easy-as app – thanks

Movie “Surviving Earth” Review

Movie “Surviving Earth” Review

Have you seen the movie “Surviving Earth” yet?  It’s really very good and worth seeing if you get the chance.

I belong to a movie club (docos) and last night’s movie ‘Surviving Earth’ was definitely worth trotting along to.

We see and hear lots about the destruction of our planet, the poisoning, the impact of intensive farming and the pollution of our waters. But for me this was the first time I’d really got into the energy crises. This film pointed out just how we are artificially sustaining 7+ billion people through our use of fossil fuels. It is everywhere – from what we eat to what we wear and where and how we live.

The ‘cast’ is made up of Prof. Tim Flannery, Ian Dunlop, Prof. Ian Lowe, Bindi Irwin (who I was very impressed with) and Uncle Bob Randall among others. Directed by Peter Charles Downey it’s an excellent film.  It’s made in Australia and shown from the Australian perspective. However, that’s pretty close to the rest of the western world.

As for the remedy? Yes, it does have solutions which is always a good positive. My view is though, that the environmental crises we’re facing is more that just energy. We must also look at all the factors from economic to animals as food, energy (fossil fuels) to other factors of pollution. Along with the chemical poisons, rain forest (and other) destruction, population explosion, wars and disease as well as our oceans and water ways.  Once we can understand that it’s more than just one or two things, then, I believe we will have a better chance at starting the reversal process.

It’s not too late – but time is running out. Each of us must become aware, and we must start a “movement”. As it says in the movies, the politicians are not going to do it …. we must.

Educate yourself on what you can do.
